Oct. 1 Marks the Start of B.C.’s Winter Driving Season.
October 09 2025,

Each year on Oct. 1, British Columbia begins its winter tire season. Drivers on most provincial highways must use approved winter tires until April 30. For certain routes without steep mountain passes or heavy snowfall, the rules conclude earlier on March 31.
Highways Under the Mandate
The regulations apply across the North and Interior, as well as on South Coast corridors like the Sea to Sky Highway. On Vancouver Island, travellers must meet requirements on the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not included in the mandate, but unpredictable weather makes preparation wise everywhere.
What Counts as Approved Tires
To meet provincial standards, tires must display either the M+S (mud and snow) symbol or the mountain and snowflake icon. They must also have a tread depth of at least 3.5 millimetres. Those who fail to meet the rules face a fine of $121, making compliance both practical and cost-effective.
Commercial Vehicle Responsibilities
Heavy commercial vehicles must carry chains on most designated routes starting Oct. 1, with roadside signs guiding when to put them in use. This rule does not apply to the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but it remains essential for road safety in other regions.
